NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team fell 2-1 to visiting Tufts in their 2012 home opener at Cressy Field Wednesday evening.
Senior forward Kelsey Perkins (Barrington, RI/Barrington HS) netted her first two goals of the season to lead the Jumbos over the Corsairs. Perkins struck first 1:45 into the game off a pass from junior midfielder Emily Cannon (Atkinson, NH/Timberlane HS). The Corsairs bounced back just over 25 minutes later when junior defender Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown HS ) found the back of the net off a pass from freshman forward Alison Ladue (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater/Raynham). After Dolce's goal, neither team found the back of the net and the two squads went to halftime knotted at one.
Perkins netted the eventual game-winner in the 43rd minute when she converted a pass from junior forward Chelsea Yogerst (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines HS).
"I'm proud of the way my team recovered from the early goal," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We made a lot of quick adjustments. In the second half, there was a lull in energy for both teams. We called a time out and came back with a little more spunk. We know that Tufts is a very strong team. To play a team like that is just going to make us better. Both teams probably improved from tonight's game."
The Corsairs and Jumbos had eight shots apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made three saves for UMD, while sophomore Brianna Keenan (Greenland, NH/Portsmouth HS) made five for the Jumbos.
UMD fell to 3-3 with the defeat, while Tufts improved to 3-1 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State Saturday. Tufts will host Colby Saturday.
