Field Hockey Shuts Out Western Connecticut, 5-0

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team defeated visiting Western Connecticut State, 5-0, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Saturday.

Senior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) scored a goal and dished out two assists to lead the Corsairs past the Colonials. Junior forward Tiffany Richard (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg HS) opened the scoring seven minutes into the contest when she converted a pass from Allan. After pressing the Colonials for the remainder of the half, senior midfielder Jenna Miedzionoski (Beverly, MA/Hamilton-Wenham Regional HS) added to the lead in the 28th minute, netting her first goal of the season.

In the second half the Corsairs continued to press the Colonials adding three more goals. Senior defender Taryn Cardiel scored her team leading fifth goal of the season 12 minutes into the second half off a pass from junior defender Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown HS ). Allan stretched the UMD lead to 4-0 just four minutes later when she converted a pass Miedzionoski. Senior forward Michaela Johnston (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield HS) capped the scoring with 45 seconds remaining as she found the back of the net for the first time this season.

"I'm proud of the way my team played,  we played well and it was a full team effort today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "Our starters and substitutes played well together and it was good for us to get a solid LEC win. Our execution and post play was solid and the hard work in practice is paying off."

The Corsairs outshot the Colonials 26 to four. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made two saves for UMD to register her third shutout of the season, while junior Courtney Hearn (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield HS) made 10 for the Colonials. 

UMD improved to 4-3 and 3-0 in the Little East with the victory, while WCSU fell to 2-5 and 0- in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Worcester State Wednesday. The Colonials will visit Framingham State Wednesday.
