Field Hockey Shuts Out Worcester State, 5-0

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team won their second straight contest defeating visiting Worcester State 5-0, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Wednesday evening.

Senior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) and junior forward Tiffany Richard (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg HS) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Corsairs to their second straight 5-0 victory.

Richard opened the scoring just under five minutes into the game when she converted a pass from junior defender Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown HS). Nineteen minutes later Allan found the back of the net off a pass from freshman forward Ashley Ellis (Lebanon, NH/Lebanon HS). Allan wasn't done as she added her another unassisted tally just five minutes later. Four minutes later the Corsairs were at it again as Richard finished off a nice pass from freshman forward Alison Laude (Bridgewater, MA/ Bridgewater/Raynham HS).

In the second half, the Corsairs continued to control the pace of play, and in the 56th minute junior midfielder Devon Herlihy (Stratham, NH/Exeter HS) capped the scoring as she netted her first goal of the season.

"Coming into  today's game we really concentrated on playing better team defense and executing better on corners," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We did just that as our passing and possession was also there today. Everyone contributed as our subs were able to step in and continue the flow of the game. We were able to move Devon (Herlihy) up and have her create a spark up for our attack."

The Corsairs outshot the Lancers 27 to zero. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) did not register a save en route to her fourth shutout of the season, while senior Rebecca Mullen (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS) made 17 stops for WSU.

UMD improved to 5-3 and 4-0 in the Little East with the victory, while WSU fell to 2-6 and 0-4 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Salem State Saturday. The Lancers will host Bridgewater State Saturday.
