SALEM, MA-Freshman forward Cory Connolly (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury HS) scored all three goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over host Salem State in a Little East Conference match at Alumni Field Saturday.
Connolly converted a pass from junior forward Tiffany Richard (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg HS) at the 19:31 mark to put UMass Dartmouth ahead, 1-0. She scored again at 33:01 on the rebound of her own shot to make it 2-0, Corsairs, at halftime. In the second half, Connolly completed her hat trick, with Richard again assisting her at 54:06 to make it 3-0. Courtney Lynch scored for the Vikings at 64:52.
"I was happy with our team's poise throughout such a physical game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We were able to score off the opportunities given to us, and I'm glad to see that Cory opened the scoring gates for herself. I knew she would start scoring, and I'm glad that today was the day."
The Corsairs outshot the Vikings, 14-11. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made five saves for UMD, while Michaela Boyer stopped seven shots for Salem State.
UMD improved to 6-3 and 5-0 in the Little East with the victory, while SSU fell to 7-2 and 3-2 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State Tuesday.
