MANSFIELD, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team won for the fourth consecutive time, defeating host Eastern Connecticut State, 4-0, in a Little East Conference match at the Mansfield Athletic Complex Tuesday.
Senior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) scored twice for the Corsairs, staking them to a 2-0 halftime lead. She put UMD ahead, 1-0, with a goal at the 25:17 mark, and then scored again 1:33 later to make it 2-0. Freshman forward Cory Connolly (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury HS) assisted on both goals.
Connolly made it 3-0 when she converted a pass from freshman midfielder Emily Anderson (Medway, MA/Medway HS) at 41:56. Senior midfielder Jenna Miedzionoski (Beverly, MA/Hamilton-Wenham HS) capped the scoring when she scored with 12 seconds remaining in the contest.
The win was UMD's fifth in the last six matches. In that span, they have posted four shutouts and allowed only three goals.
"Today was an opportunity to play a strong game despite the weather conditions and being on the road," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We had some nice passing patterns and I was happy with our goals scored. Erica and Cory played well together on the forward line and they were able to cause several corners and shots on goal. Going forward, we need to focus on better statistical results within the attacking red zone."
The Corsairs outshot the Warriors, 31-2. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made one save to earn her fifth shutout for UMD, while Olivia Mullen stopped 13 shots for Eastern Connecticut.
UMD improved to 7-3 and 6-0 in the Little East with the victory, while ECSU fell to 3-7 and 1-5 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Nichols Thursday.
