NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Senior defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) has been named LEC Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman forward Cory Connolly (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury HS) has been named LEC Rookie of the Week. It's the second such honor for Cardiel this season.
Cardiel helped lead the Corsair defense that held opponents to a single goal and just 11 shots on goal in three games last week. The Corsairs blanked LEC opponents Eastern Connecticut State and Southern Maine and defeated Nichols in overtime, 2-1. Cardiel also scored the game-winning goal against Southern Maine.
Connolly scored two goals and added three assists for seven points in the Corsairs' three games last week. She scored a goal and had two assists against Eastern Connecticut, assisted on the first goal against Nichols, and scored a goal against Southern Maine.
"Taryn has made a major impact for this program since her freshman year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "She is a top notch defender, and has made an impact attacking on corners as well as being the last defender. She is always reliable and her leadership has been very strong throughout the whole season. Cory is a freshman who I knew would make an immediate impact. She comes from a good program and she and (senior forward) Erica (Allan, Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) work really well together on the forward line. Cory is just starting to hit her groove, and I look forward to seeing her in the games ahead."
UMass Dartmouth is 9-3 and 7-0 in the LEC and visits Trinity Tuesday.
