Taryn Cardiel Earns ECAC Defensive Honor

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-A member of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team has been honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Senior defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS), who was named Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week earlier this week, has been named NCAA Division III Defensive Player of the Week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Cardiel helped lead the Corsair defense that held opponents to a single goal and just 11 shots on goal in three games last week. The Corsairs blanked LEC opponents Eastern Connecticut State and Southern Maine and defeated Nichols in overtime, 2-1. Cardiel also scored the game-winning goal against Southern Maine.

"Taryn has made a major impact for this program since her freshman year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "She is a top notch defender, and has made an impact attacking on corners as well as being the last defender. She is always reliable and her leadership has been very strong throughout the whole season."

UMass Dartmouth is 9-4 and 7-0 in the LEC and visits Wesleyan Thursday.
