Late Goal Sends Field Hockey to LEC Championship Match

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA Junior defender Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown HS) scored her second goal of the game, re-directing home a pass with 2:12 remaining to lift the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Plymouth State  in a Little East Conference Tournament semi-final playoff match at Cressy Field Saturday.

After a penalty corner, junior forward Tiffany Richard (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg HS) sent a pass towards the front of the net and Dolce tipped it in to break a 2-2 tie. Senior defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) also drew an assist.

The Corsairs had started the scoring when freshman midfielder Emily Anderson (Medway, MA/Medway HS) converted a pass from Dolce at 5:31. Sophomore midfielder Nikki Garvey (Canaan, NH/Mascoma HS) tied the score for PSU at 12:11, with junior midfielder Lauren Carroll (Rollinsford, NH/Somersworth HS) assisting.

Dolce scored, with senior midfielder Jenna Miedzionoski (Beverly, MA/Hamilton-Wenham Regional HS) assisting to make it 2-1 at 16:28. Junior forward Jackie Morin (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough HS) tied the score at 2-2 when she scored at 46:16.

"It was a battle," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "If you look at the stats and the score, we're still looking to try to find out finishing touch. Plymouth State's goalie played a strong game. Taryn (Cardiel) is just top notch defensively, (junior midfielder) Devon Herlihy (Stratham, NH/Exeter HS) also stood out for us, Emily (Anderson) played an amazing game for us at left wing, and Tori played very well for us in the back. We finished when we had to."

The Corsairs outshot the Panthers, 17-6.  Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made one save for UMass Dartmouth, while junior Hilary Lemelin (Milan, NH/Berlin HS) made 10 saves for PSU.

UMD improved to 16-5 with the victory, while Plymouth State dropped to 11-7 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will host the LEC championship match against Keene State Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
