NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team hosted MIT at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon. The Engineers narrowly escaped with a 2-1 double-overtime victory.
MIT's senior forward Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J. / Oak Knoll School) netted the game-winning goal with 12:04 left in the second overtime.
In the first half, the Corsair's Devon Herihy (Stratham, NH/Exeter) capitalized on a penalty corner with 11:59 remaining. The assists were recorded by Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA/Medway) and Tori Dolce (Jamestown, RI/North Kingston).
Heading into the second half down 1-0, the Engineers tied the score six minutes later. MIT's Michelle Teplensky (Somers, NY/North Salem) scored an unassisted goal, tying the game 1-1.
The Engineers goalkeeper Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) recorded 13 saves, while UMass Dartmouth's goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, Ma/ Old Rochester Regional) notched nine saves.
"This was another opportunity to improve," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Maher. "We played another top team in the nation. Yes, it is still a double overtime loss, but it's only up from here."
MIT improved to 2-0 with the victory, while UMass Dartmouth dropped to 0-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Endicott Wednesday. MIT will host Gordon on Tuesday.
