DANBURY, Conn. -- Senior Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, Mass.) sandwiched a pair of goals between classmate Victoria Dolce's (Jamestown, R.I.) two-goal performance to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey to a 4-0 victory at Little East rival Western Connecticut State University this evening at the Western Athletic Complex. The Corsairs held a decisive 45-7 advantage in shots.
UMass Dartmouth (6-3) remained unbeaten in the conference circuit with a 3-0 record, while the Colonials (3-5) fall to 0-3 in the Little East.
The visitors cracked the scoring column in the 22nd minute, when junior Chelsey Campbell (Barre, Mass.) fed Taylor for her eighth marker of the season. The Corsairs peppered the Western cage with a 20-3 advantage in shots, but entered the halftime intermission with a 1-0 lead.
For the third time in the past four matches, UMass Dartmouth scored at least three goals in the second stanza to break open a close contest. Dolce found the back of the net twice within 64 seconds to stake the Corsairs to a 3-0 lead. Taylor registered an insurance marker in the 56th minute to complete the scoring and post UMass Dartmouth's sixth win in its past seven contests.
Senior Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, Mass.) made three saves to earn her second shutout victory of the season. Her counterpart, Kristy Trotta, stopped a season-high 26 Corsair attempts in the loss.
UMass Dartmouth will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1, when the Corsairs travel to Worcester State for a conference contest.
