Corsairs Nip Panthers, 4-3

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Katelin Morrissey (Taunton, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 63rd minute as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth edged Plymouth State University, 4-3, this afternoon at Arold Field in a Little East field hockey match.

The Corsairs and the Panthers entered the contest in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings with Bridgewater State. UMass Dartmouth (12-5) remained in second with a 9-1 mark, while Plymouth State (9-5) had its five-match winning streak snapped to slip to 8-2.

The visitors utilized a well-balanced scoring as attack as four student-athletes found the back of the net. Senior Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Devon Herlihy (Exeter, N.H.) paced UMD with a goal and an assist, while classmate Tiffany Richard (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Morrissey notched second half markers.

Taylor opened the scoring in the 10th minute, when she poked her team-leading 15th goal of the season past the charging Panther netminder. Herlihy converted off a penalty corner to give the visitors a 2-1 lead heading into the halftime intermission. Senior Tori Dolce (Jamestown, R.I.) and sophomore Emily Anderson (Medway, Mass.) were credited with a helper on Herlihy's sixth marker.

The Corsairs recorded their largest lead of the contest, when Richard produced her first goal of the campaign off an assist from Herlihy. Plymouth State responded nearly six minutes later, but Morrissey potted her first collegiate game-winner at the 62:22 mark.

Senior Lauren O'Brien (Dartmouth, Mass.) made seven stops to earn the victory, while Hilary Lemelin posted four saves in the loss.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30, when the Corsairs host Wellesley College on Senior Night.
