FITCHBURG, Mass. – Sophomore Michaela Carrier (Richmond, R.I.) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 20th minute, and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's defensive backfield limited Fitchburg State University to four shots on net as the Corsairs posted a 2-0 road victory at Elliot Field.
UMass Dartmouth earned its fifth win in its past six matches to improve to 9-8, including a 6-3 mark inside the conference circuit. The Falcons fell to 5-10 and 1-8 in conference action.
The Corsairs controlled the pace of play from the opening whistle, recording the first nine shots. The visitors were rewarded in the 20th minute, when Carrier drove in her second marker of the season to stake UMass Dartmouth to a 1-0 lead. The Corsairs entered the halftime intermission with a 10-4 advantage in shots.
UMass Dartmouth registered an insurance marker in the 55th minute. The Corsairs fired back to back shots on net before junior Ali Ladue (Bridgewater, Mass.) knocked in her own rebound. It was her seventh marker of the campaign.
Sophomore Elizabeth St. Germaine (Wareham, Mass.) turned back all four shots she faced to earn the shutout victory. UMass Dartmouth tallied its third shutout of the season, the first since a 3-0 win at Clark on Oct. 16.
The Corsairs held a 20-9 advantage in shots and earned 16 of the 17 penalty corners assessed.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 4 p.m. on October 25, when the Corsairs host Little East Conference rival Plymouth State University.
