MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Senior Stephanie Hogan (Northford, Conn.) scored a pair of goals to lead Eastern Connecticut to a 5-1 victory over UMass Dartmouth in the Little East Conference field hockey opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield Athletic Complex.
Hogan staked the host Warriors (1-2, 1-0 LEC) to a 1-0 lead just 6:30 into the contest, and markers from junior Khiara Valentine (Morristown, N.J.) and sophomore Julia Koonjy (Jefferson, N.J.) that came 81 seconds apart extended that margin to 3-0 in the 19th minute. Freshman Kylie Dias (Fall River, Mass.) got the visiting Corsairs (0-3, 0-1 LEC) on the board with her second tally of the season on a feed from senior Ciara Anderson (Medway, Mass.) just 1:44 later, but Hogan’s second goal of the day in the 27th minute staked Eastern Connecticut to a 4-1 edge at the break. Sophomore Sydney Hogan (Northford, Conn.) closed out the hosts’ scoring just 1:53 after intermission with an unassisted marker that accounted for the final margin.
Senior Tess Parker (Columbia, Conn.) and junior Lindsey McKeon (Chester, Conn.) added assists in the win for the Warriors, as sophomore Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn.) picked up the victory in goal for Eastern Connecticut with five saves in 61 minutes of action. Senior Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) made 14 stops in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, as the hosts outshot the Corsairs by a 24-9 margin overall (19-7 on goal) and held a 12-11 edge in penalty corners for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth will be idle until next Saturday, September 15th when the Corsairs entertain Keene State in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field at 4:00 pm, while Eastern Connecticut also returns to action next Saturday afternoon by heading to Gorham, Maine to square off with Southern Maine in a Little East clash beginning at 3:00 pm.
