CAMBRIDGE, MA- Katie Kauffman scored the tie-breaking goal in the second half to give host MIT a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team in their 2010 season opener at Jack Barry Field Saturday afternoon.
Kauffman scored unassisted on a rebound with 13:24 remaining to put the Engineers on top. Sophomore forward Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA/Bishop Stang HS) put UMD on top, converting a pass from senior forward Jacke Anderson (Medway, MA/Medway HS) at 16:49. Jessica Oleinik tied the score for MIT when she tipped in a pass from Kameron Klauber with 3:39 left in the first half.
MIT out shot UMass Dartmouth, 23-12. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Gallo (East Greenwich, MA/East Greenwich HS) made 13 saves for the Corsairs, while Keri Dixon made two for the Engineers.
"MIT made the second round of the NCAAs last year, and they're a good first opponent, they always give us a good indication of where we are," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "They have a lot of speed, and we're still putting things together. We got an outstanding performance from our goalie, Kelsey Gallo, now we just have to work on some things. This is a reality check for us, and it lets us know that we have to work harder."
The Corsairs dropped to 0-1 with the defeat, while the Engineers improved to 1-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Clark Tuesday evening.
