NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team scored three goals in the second half and downed visiting Wheaton, 5-1, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Thursday evening.
Junior forward Natalie Brown (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) scored twice to lead the UMass Dartmouth attack. Brown converted a pass from freshman forward Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA/Bishop Stang HS) to put the Corsairs on the board and tie the score at 1-1 10:45 into the game. Her second goal of the game gave UMD a 3-1 lead with 14:57 remaining.
Junior forward Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/Quinnipiac) broke a 1-1 tie, giving the Corsairs a 2-1 lead when she scored the first of her two goals, assisted by senior midfielder Kylie Treat (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) at 15:57. Kinchla scored again, and freshman forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) scored the other goal for UMD. Forward Julia Atwood had given the Lyons a 1-0 lead 2:43 into the game.
"We wanted to finish on our second opportunities," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We wanted to be better in the circle, and we were able to do that. We did a lot of little things right tonight. If we keep improving, we'll be right where we want to be when we need to be there."
UMD out shot Wheaton, 15-9. Senior goalkeepers Seana Golden (Somerset, MA/Bishop Stang HS) of the Corsairs and Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) of the Lyons each made six saves.
UMD improved to 2-1 with the victory, while Wheaton dropped to 2-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State Saturday. The Lyons will visit Lasell Saturday.
