NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team defeated visiting Westfield State, 4-1, in the 2011 Little East Conference opener for both teams at Cressy Field Saturday.

Westfield State struck first with 22:59 remaining in the first half. Owls sophomore forward Sarah Pliszka (Enfield, CT/Enfield HS) stuffed a shot passed Corsairs sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Gallo (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich HS), off a pass from junior midfielder Lauren Tavares (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS), giving the Owls an early 1-0 advantage.

The Corsairs pulled even at the 17:47 mark of the first half. On a penalty corner attempt, junior forward Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA/Bishop Stang HS) found junior defender Taryn Cardiel at the point, and Cardiel whistled a shot past Owls senior goalie Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS), making it a 1-1 game. UMD took a 2-1 lead with 1:03 left in the first half when sophomore Kayla Ribsam (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterdon Regional HS) netted an unassisted goal.

Corsairs junior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) helped power the Corsairs to victory with two goals in the second half. With 30:16 remaining in the second half, Ribsam found Allan on a 2-on-1 advantage, giving UMD a 3-1 lead. After a failed corner attempt by UMD, Allan gathered the loose ball in front of the net and snuck a shot past McCarthy, securing the 4-1 win for UMass Dartmouth.

"I'm confident with our lineup and I knew it would come together," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We made a couple of adjustments that I'm glad we were able to make for our first Little East Conference game. We did a good job of defending their strongest players. Our front line of Eleanor [Taylor], Kayla [Ribsam], and Erica [Allan] really worked hard and made some tweaks that reflected on the scoreboard. Taryn [Cardiel] was phenomenal with her straight shots. If we keep improving one game at a time, we'll be where we need to be, when we need to be there." UMass Dartmouth out shot Westfield State, 21-10. Gallo made six saves for UMD, while McCarthy stopped five shots and junior Khrystyna Mitchell (Shelbourne Falls, MA/Mohawk Trail Regional HS) made 1 save for Westfield.

The Corsairs improved to 1-2 and 1-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Owls dropped to 2-1 and 0-1 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Endicott Wednesday evening. Westfield State will host Regis Thursday.
