BRIDGEWATER, MA-Host Bridgewater State broke a 1-1 tie with two second-half goals and went to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team, 3-1, in the 2009 Little East Conference opener for both teams at Swenson Pitch Saturday.
Shelby Farland gave the Bears the lead for good when she converted a pass from Bethany Bush at the 49:37 mark. Katelyn Taylor added an insurance goal when she took a pass from Bush and scored with 1:57 left in the game.
Bush put BSC on top when she scored the first goal of the game at the 6:58 mark. Junior forward Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS/Quinnipiac) tied the score, taking a pass from junior forward Natalie Brown (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) and tying the game at 12:54.
Bridgewater out shot UMD, 18-9. Senior goalkeeper Seana Golden (Somerset, MA/Bishop Stang HS) of the Corsairs made 10 saves, while the Bears' Katie Weber made seven.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-2 and 0-1 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while BSC improved to 2-0 and 1-0 in LEC play with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Endicott Tuesday.
