NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Sophomore forward Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA/Bishop Stang) scored the lone goal as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team defeated visiting Worcester State, 1-0, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Tuesday evening.
Both squads maintained back-and-forth action during a drizzly first half of play. There were limited scoring opportunities for each team, resulting in a 0-0 tie at halftime. "In the first half, we were forcing the ball a little bit too much. Instead of just looking at our opportunities around the circle, we tried forcing it in and that's where Worcester did a good job of blocking up the circle," said Corsairs Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "Once we started using the options given to us is when we took advantage," continued Castonguay.
The Corsairs struck late in the second half when Taylor converted a pass from senior defender Becca Festinger (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield HS) into the back of the goal, giving UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead with 8:00 left to play in the game. The UMass Dartmouth defense held strong in the final minutes, securing the 1-0 victory.
"We really played as a team, and that was part of our goal coming into this half of the season," said Castonguay. The Corsairs outshot the Lancers, 8-6. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) made three saves for the Corsairs, while junior Kat Masterjohn (Warren, MA/Quaboag HS) made four for Worcester State.
UMD improved to 7-4 and 5-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Lancers dropped to 6-5 and 3-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State Saturday. Worcester State will host Salem State Saturday.
