NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team has been picked to finish third in the annual Little East Conference Pre-Season Coaches' Poll.
The Corsairs received two first-place votes and 127 points, putting them one point behind second-place Plymouth State and 12 points behind Keene State. The Owls got nine first-place votes, the Panthers the other one.
"It's something you look at every year and talk about with your coaching staff, and I think my team pays more attention to it than I do," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "It's not that important how you start, but how you end."
Castonguay said that the conference race is wide open. "Every conference game is going to be a challenge this year," said Castonguay. "We can't control the poll, so we pick the things we can control so we can prepare ourselves. Anything can happen in our conference. Plymouth State is ranked ahead of us, and we beat Keene State at home last year and they ended up winning the whole thing. I have a lot of respect for all of the teams in the conference."
The Corsairs were 16-6 last season and went 8-3 in the LEC, tying for second place. UMD opens their 2009 season Saturday at MIT.
