Taryn Cardiel Earns LEC Field Hockey Honors

Oct. 17, 2011

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) has been honored by the Little East Conference.

Cardiel has been named LEC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.

Cardiel scored one and added an assist in Saturday's 3-2 LEC victory against Bridgewater State. She also helpd lead a UMass Dartmouth defensive effort that held Trinity and BSU to nine shots each in two games last week.

"I am thrilled that Taryn is receiving this honor," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. " I consider the position of sweeper to be the backbone position on the field, and Taryn's ability to deliver on free hits, defensive plays and corner execution is a major factor in our team's success this season. I put a lot of pressure on Taryn, mainly because she has the ability to make really big things happen during her duration as a player in this program. She is a verbal leader on the field and when I first saw Taryn play out at a festival in California, I knew that I had to have her at UMD--I'm glad it all worked out the way it has."

The Corsairs are 8-6 and 7-1 in the Little East Conference. They will return to action when they host Fitchburg State Wednesday evening.
