Field Hockey Hosts Little East Conference Playoff Opener

Nov. 1, 2011

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team is back in their usual position-hosting a first-round game in the Little East Conference tournament.

The third-seeded Corsairs will host a first round match for the third year in a row and fourth time in five years when they play sixth-seeded Worcester State at 6:30 Wednesday evening at Cressy Field.

UMass Dartmouth brings a 9-9 record into the match, while the Lancers are 10-7. The Corsairs defeated WSU on the road in their regular season match, 7-3.

"I'm happy for us to have a fresh start for what I consider to be a new season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "It's a clean slate, and it's a place we've been before and a place where we are comfortable being. It comes down to talent and coaching, and I feel that we have what it takes to be a strong contender for the conference championship. We have to take it one game at a time, and take advantage of our opportunities."

The time between games is short, with the tournament champion having to win three times in five days, but Castonguay isn't concerned. "I feel that physically, we're ready for that, and mentally, it might be better for us," said Castonguay. "We don't need a lot of time between games; it's just a matter of tweaking w couple of things. It's going to take 11 players at a time on the field plus our depth to step up in order for us to be successful."

The winner of Wednesday's game plays the winner of the match between Western Connecticut State and Plymouth State Friday, with the higher-seeded team hosting. The championship will be held Sunday at the site of the highest remaining seed. The winner will earn the LEC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championships.
