NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team will begin NCAA Tournament action when they visit Middlebury in a first round match Wednesday afternoon. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at Peter Kohn Field.
The Corsairs enter the tournament with 15-6 record, having won three times in a row and seven of their last eight games. The Panthers are 11-4, having won five of their last six matches before being knocked out of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament by Williams last weekend.
UMass Dartmouth is making its first appearance in the NCAAs. "We're excited, with the run we've had and the team chemistry we've been able to put together, we're going into it with he will to win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "There have been many upsets, so why not us? We're going into it with the will to win, and we're looking to make a mark for UMass Dartmouth."
The Panthers will be a formidable opponent. "They are a strong team with good ball handling skills," said Castonguay. "They have all the basics down par, and they play good, clean field hockey. They may have the upper hand with the strength of their schedule and the fact that they've been here several times before, but there won't be any surprises form us after playing Trinity and Tufts. We need to play at our best."
The NCAA Tournament has been a goal for the Corsairs. "When I first came in, this is what I was hoping for," said Castonguay. "Our schedule wasn't as strong as it is now. It makes you proud as a coach to see that the seniors are an extension of the coaching staff, it makes it much easier for the coach."
If the Corsairs win Wednesday, they will play Trinity Saturday afternoon at Ursinus. The regional championship will be played Sunday.
