NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Roger Williams raced to an 8-1 halftime lead and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team, in the Corsairs' 2009 opener at Cressy Field Thursday afternoon.
The Corsairs scored just once in each half, getting a goal from sophomore attacker Rachel Carlucci (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS/Southern Connecticut State) with 3:39 remaining in the first half, and another from junior midfielder Gillian Carey (Waltham, MA/Waltham HS) with 5:32 left in the game. Carlucci assisted on Carey's goal. UMass Dartmouth was without several players due to illness.
RWU scored three times within two minutes and five seconds in the first half to take a 5-0 lead, then scored thrice more before Carlucci put the Corsairs on the scoreboard. The Hawks scored five times in the first 10 minutes of the second half to open up a 13-1 advantage.
Jackie Criss, Lauren Ferri and Kasey Beckwith each scored three goals for Roger Williams, while Claire Halliday and Jillian Colley each scored twice. Criss and Halliday each had three assists.
"Obviously, we didn't have the chemistry we do when we have everybody there," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "The first game is always somewhat shaky; it seems we usually need a few games to get everything together. We were ineffective on offense, and there was too much pressure on our defense."
The Hawks out shot the Corsairs, 33-11. UMass Dartmouth senior goalkeeper Lauren Barber (Andover, MA/Andover HS) made 10 saves, while Amanda Magee made nine for Roger Williams.
The Corsairs dropped to 0-1 with the defeat, while the Hawks improved to 1-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they play Springfield next Tuesday in West Palm Beach, FL in the first match of their spring trip. RWU will play Scranton in San Antonio, TX next Wednesday on their spring trip.
