Late Comeback Fails as Women's Lacrosse Falls at Smith, 10-7
April 24, 2009
NORTHAMPTON, MA-Host Smith took an 8-1 halftime lead and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team, 10-7, in a non-conference match at the Smith College Athletic Fields Thursday evening.
Freshman midfielder Allison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) put UMass Dartmouth on the scoreboard when she scored with seven seconds remaining in the first half. The Pioneers scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 10-1 lead, before the Corsairs came back, scoring the final six goals of the game.
Junior midfielder Kara Basque (Plainville, MA/King Phillip Regional HS/Sacred Heart) led the comeback, scoring three times in the second half. Junior midfielder Andrea Russo (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) scored with 5:46 remaining, but the Corsairs were unable to come any closer.
"We came back big time, but we ran out of time," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. "I was pleased with our team for coming back strong after we came out a little flat in the first half. We have games three days in a row with a game against a tough Eastern team tomorrow, so we played everyone tonight."
Smith out shot UMass Dartmouth, 31-17. Junior goalkeeper Liz Miller (Littleton, MA/Westford Academy/New Hampshire) made 10 saves for the Corsairs, while Chelsea Henderson and Elizabeth Niehoff combined to make 10 stops for the Pioneers.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 5-8 with the defeat, while Smith improved to 4-10 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State in a Little East Conference match Friday.
