MANSFIELD, CT-Daniella Marchitto and Chelsea Downer each scored twice to lead host Eastern Connecticut State to a 6-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team n the final Little East Conference match of the season for both teams at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex Saturday.
Jo-Ann Merheb gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead when she scored in the 10th minute before Marchitto scored her first goal of the match in the 23rd minute. Tara Merheb's goal made it 3-0, ECSU, at halftime.
Marchitto scored her second goal 2:53 into the second half, and Downer scored twice to complete the scoring.
"They scored two quick goals, and another one before the end of the half when it started raining and then snowing," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "We knew the weather was going to be a factor, that's why we pushed the game up. The ball didn't bounce our way today, and that's the first time I've ever seen weather like that. We just have to come home and get ready for the playoffs on Tuesday."
The Warriors outshot the Corsairs, 17-9. Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Borges (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) and freshman Amanda Mendes (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) combined to make five saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Theresa Pagnozzi and Mackenzie MacLeod combined for four stops for ECSU.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 7-10-2 and 2-4-1 in the Little East Conference with the loss, while Eastern Connecticut State improved to 10-8-0 and 6-1-0 in LEC play with the victory. Both teams will return to action when the Little East Conference playoffs begin Tuesday.
