OT Goal Sinks Women's Soccer at Salve, 3-2

MIDDLETON, RI-Angela Saporito scored on a free kick 3:19 into sudden death overtime to lift host Salve Regina to a 3-2 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team in a non-conference match at Gaudet Field Wednesday evening.

The Corsairs had come back to tie the match with just 1:31 remaining when sophomore midfielder Maura Goncalves (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) scored her second goal of the match, converting the rebound of a shot by sophomore forward Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) in the 89th minute.
Jessica Broadhurst gave SRU a 1-0 halftime when she scored in the 39th minute. Goncalves tied the game when she converted Friedland's cross at the 55:30 mark. Caitlin Eastwood's header gave the Seahawks a 3-2 lead in the 84th minute.
"We came out flat in the first half, and they scored before halftime, but we came back in the second half and created a ton of chances," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "We worked hard and scored a goal to tie it up. Salve scored, and then we scored a late goal to tie it. We worked hard and we played well."

UMass Dartmouth outshot Salve Regina, 22-17. Junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) made seven saves for the Corsairs, while Jacqueline McPherson made nine for the Seahawks.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 1-1 with the defeat, while Salve Regina improved to 2-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Nichols Saturday.
