Women's Soccer Shuts Out Wentworth, 4-0

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team ran their unbeaten streak to five as they topped visiting Wentworth 4-0 in non-conference action at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.

After three consecutive overtime contests, senior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) netted two goals to lead the Corsairs to their most lopsided victory of the season. Van Ness opened the scoring in the 15th minute when she converted a pass from sophomore forward Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, MA/ Dartmouth HS). The Corsairs would take the 1-0 lead into the half.

UMass Dartmouth stretched their lead nine minutes into the second half when junior forward Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS) fired a shot from outside the box that Leopards' senior goalkeeper Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional HS) misplayed. The Corsairs would tack on another score 12 minutes later when senior midfielder Vanessa Demelo (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) converted a penalty kick for her first goal of the season. Van Ness capped the scoring in the 69th minute when she converted an excellent through ball from Pierce.

The Corsairs outshot the Leopards, 26-6. Gardner made eight saves for Wentworth, while junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) made four saves for the Corsairs en route to her fifth shutout of the season.

"These afternoon midweek games are tough for us to get up for, and even though we tried some new motivational tactics, we still came out flat," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "Once we got on the board our adrenaline kicked in and we started to play more physical with better ball control. Again it's good to see the hard work our forwards put in at practice paying off as Jill (Van Ness) did a great job finishing today."

UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-1-1 with the victory, while Wentworth dropped to 1-5-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Saturday. The Leopards will visit Curry Saturday.
