Beacons Shine Late, 3-2

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- UMass Boston midfielder Natasha Stibor (San Francisco, Calif.) found the back of the net with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Beacons to a 3-2 Little East Conference victory against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.

In what appeared to be the last offensive attempt of regulation, Beacon freshman Marina Kelly (Whitman, Mass.) lofted a free kick attempt towards the Corsair net. Freshman net minder Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass.) leaped up with two hands extended, deflecting the ball off the post. The ball caromed back out in front of the net where Stibor kicked home the game-winner.

Senior Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, Mass.) contributed on both scoring plays for UMass Dartmouth (3-5-0, 1-1 LEC). In the 22nd minute of the opening period, Gonsalves out ran the defender up the left side of the pitch and delivered a beautifully paced cross to sophomore Erica Farias (Tiverton, R.I.) who straightened it into the back of the net. With the score even at 1-1 in the second half, Gonsalves floated an attempt at the UMass Boston net. Senior Dani Perkins (Murrieta, Calif.) stopped the shot at the peak of her leap, but could not keep the ball from crossing the goal line in time. Gonsalves currently leads the LEC in goals scored (7) and points (16).

Senior Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) added two scores of her own to the UMass Boston (4-2-0, 2-0 LEC) attack. In the 83rd minute, she buried a penalty kick opportunity into the lower left portion of the goal to tie the game at two apiece. The senior sandwiched a score between Farias and Gonsalves when Kelly delivered a long pass to a streaking Ledin, who then pushed the ball past the UMass Dartmouth goalie for her fifth strike of the season.

In net, Perkins registered a pair of saves in route to her third win of the season, while Boucher tripled her previous single game-high with nine saves for the Corsairs.

UMass Dartmouth returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when the Corsairs travel Bridgewater State for a 7 pm contest. The Beacons host Salem State at 2 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in their next game.
