Rhode Island College Slips Past Women's Soccer, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UMass Dartmouth dictated the pace of play in the second half, firing off 11 shots to Rhode Island College's three, but a slow first half doomed the Corsairs, as the Anchorwomen were able to sneak by with a 2-1 Little East Conference victory on Wednesday.

The Basics

Score: Rhode Island College 2, UMass Dartmouth 1
Rhode Island College (5-8-2, 2-2-1 LEC) | UMass Dartmouth (5-9-2, 2-3-0 LEC)

How it Happened

RIC put up the only two goals it needed in the first half, both shots from deep that escaped UMass Dartmouth goalkeeper Becca Field (Brentwood, N.H.). The first came from the foot of Anchorwoman junior Stephanie Ricci (Smithfield, R.I.), who curved the setup ball from Leah Gravel (Johnston, R.I.) and Olivia Capraro (North Providence, R.I.) into the far post from 25 yards out.

Late in the half, the Corsairs were whistled for a hand ball, and RIC's Jaclyn Greenman (Waterford, Conn.) took her mark for the free kick, launching the ball from 30 yards out and finding the back of the net.

After being outshot 6-3 in the opening stanza, UMass Dartmouth rebounded offensively, but were only able to convert on one chance. Senior Erica Farias (Tiverton, R.I.) headed in the score in the 58th minute off a Jennifer Woehl (Middletown, R.I.) corner kick, cutting the deficit in half. The Corsairs maintained most possession until the waning seconds, but the RIC defense prevented the equalizer despite Woehl forcing two saves from RIC's Brianna Sousa (Warwick, R.I.).

Inside the Numbers

  • Woehl, a freshman who started her second-straight contest on Wednesday, has now registered at least a point in the last three outings.
  • Farias registered her team-leading sixth goal on the season for the Corsairs.
  • In net, Field gathered three stops, while Sousa turned aside five shots on the game.
  • Rhode Island College collects its first win over UMass Dartmouth since 2010, when the Anchorwomen prevailed 4-0 against the Corsairs.

Up Next

The Corsairs make their final road trip of the season on Saturday, traveling to Keene State for a 1 p.m. start in the penultimate league contest of the regular season.
