PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Brittany DeGrooth’s (Westerly, R.I.) goal with 8:21 remaining in regulation lifted Rhode Island College to a 1-1 double overtime draw with UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference women’s soccer match played Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.
Freshman Sarah Vieira (Dartmouth, Mass.) staked the visiting Corsairs (5-5-5, 2-1-3 LEC) to a 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute of play with her first collegiate marker from 10 yards out on an assist from junior Ella Rath (Pawcatuck, Conn.), and that score held up until DeGrooth converted a breakaway for her 11th tally on the year on a feed from fellow senior Olivia Capraro (North Providence, R.I.) to forge the deadlock in the 82nd minute for the host Anchorwomen (5-7-1, 2-3-1 LEC). Rhode Island College had all four shots on goal in the two extra sessions, as UMass Dartmouth extended its unbeaten streak to six straight (two wins, four ties), its longest such skein since a nine-match unbeaten string during the 2012 campaign.
Sophomore Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) made four saves in 55 minutes of action to earn the tie in net for the Corsairs, who received seven stops in 55 minutes of play from senior Korina Miguel (New Bedford, Mass.). Junior Erica Edwards (North Kingstown, R.I.) recorded four saves in going the distance in goal for the Anchorwomen, as Rhode Island College outshot UMass Dartmouth by a 17-14 margin overall (12-5 on goal). Each team took four corner kicks in the contest.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Gorham, Maine on Saturday afternoon to take on Southern Maine in a Little East Conference clash beginning at Noon, while Rhode Island College hosts Massachusetts Maritime in a non-league outing on Monday evening at Alumni Field that begins at 6:00 pm.
