BOSTON, MA -- Freshman forward Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, MA) scored twice and sophomore goalkeeper Ashley McRoberts (Merrimack, NH) stopped 11 shots to give the fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team a 4-0 victory over visiting number five seed University of Massachusetts Dartmouth today in the quarterfinals of the Little East Conference tournament at the Clark Athletic Center Field.
The Beacons improve to 8-10-2 on the season with a victory in their first-ever playoff contest, while the Corsairs fall to 4-10-4. UMass Boston advances to the LEC tournament semifinals against number one seed Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT at 6:00 p.m.
Mulry's scored at the 24:55 mark of the first half when she converted a cross from freshman midfielder Molly Kuchar (Ashville, NC) at the top of the 18-yard box. Her second score was unassisted when she intercepted a defensive clear and scored from the top of the 18-yard marker to give UMass Boston a 3-0 advantage at 57:07 of the second half.
Freshman defender Brianna Cavanaugh (Belchertown, MA) scored the Beacons' second goal when she scored on the rebound after Corsair sophomore goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) had stopped her initial shot at the 50:16 mark. Sophomore forward Jillian Moreira (Somerville, MA) scored the final goal with just seven seconds left in the match.
The Corsairs out shot UMass Boston, 22-13. Braga made four saves for UMass Dartmouth, which completed their season.
