NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Borges (Somerset, MA/.Somerset HS) and sophomore goalie Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) combined for the shutout and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team blanked host Nichols, 2-0, in a non-conference match at Vendetti Field Thursday.
Each UMD goalkeeper made two saves, with Borges starting and Chauvin playing the second half.
Freshman midfielder Danielle Gauvin (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) gave the Corsairs a 1-0 lead, scoring off a corner kick in the 21st minute. Junior midfielder Vanessa DeMelo (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS/CCRI) assisted on the play.
"I'm happy with the win, and it's a great way to start the season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "It was really nice to get a shutout, our defense played really well. We put the ball in the net, and we hit the crossbar and three posts. We've played four games in eight days, and we're looking forward to taking this weekend off."
The Corsairs outshot the Bison, 20-6, with Nichols goalkeeper Maureen Lynch making 10 saves. "We have a lot of depth, and it was nice to be able to put several players in the game," said Hanewich. "It was a good team effort."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-1 with the victory, while Nichols fell to 0-3 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Eastern Nazarene next Wednesday.
