NORTHAMPTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team defeated host Smith, 2-1, in a non-conference match at the Smith College Athletic Fields Saturday.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle between both teams. The Pioneers put the first point on the scoreboard when freshmen forward Fiona Jones (Afton, VA/Nelson County HS) gathered a long pass from sophomore forward Eleanor Theurer (Gainesville, FL/Oak Hill) and fired a shot past Corsair senior goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS), giving Smith the 1-0 advantage going into halftime.
The Pioneers maintained their lead until halfway through the second half when the Corsairs scored two goals in an 80-second span. With 28:44 to play, UMass Dartmouth freshmen forward Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, MA/Tri-County) drove a header past Pioneer sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, FL/Southwest) evening the score at 1-1. Just 1:20 later, freshmen midfielder Sam Silvia (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) blasted a bouncing deflection from 30 yards out into the upper corner of the goal, giving the Corsairs the 2-1 lead.
"It was probably the nicest goal I've ever seen a college women's player score...it was absolutely unreal," said Corsairs head coach Nicole Hanewich. UMass Dartmouth held off the Pioneers the remainder of the half, securing the 2-1 victory.
The Corsairs out shot the Pioneers, 17-7, with UMass Dartmouth taking ten shots on goal while Smith tallied six. Braga finished with five saves during the contest while Gregor made eight. "The team is so happy and I'm so proud of all of them. They didn't give up, they played hard and came out with the victory," said Hanewich.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 2-2 with the victory, while Smith dropped to 0-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host MIT Tuesday.
