NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- Freshman midfielder Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) scored on a penalty kick with 4:33 remaining in regulation time and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team and visiting Bridgewater State played to a 1-1, double overtime tie in their non-conference match at Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Corsairs were awarded a penalty kick after a Bridgewater State foul in the box, and Gonsalves fired home her shot to tie the score.
Senior forward Jordan McDermott (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS) gave Bridgewater State the early lead when she converted a pass from sophomore midfielder Megan O'Leary (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) in the 13th minute.
"I'm very proud of my team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "We didn't give up. Everybody did their part today. We dominated possessions, we won balls in the air, we put the ball on net and freshman Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had some great chances. (Sophomore forward) Erica (Jonasson, Wrentham, MA/Tri-County HS) was all over the place, (junior goalkeeper) Stephanie (Borges, Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) was great in net; we really have a good core of players. We're a young team but we are starting to get it. We have a big week and overtime games can be taxing, so we are going to rest and recover."
The Corsairs outshot the Bears, 17-12. Borges made six saves for UMD, while junior Kristen Rowe (Burlington, MA/Burlington HS) and sophomore Kerry Condon (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) combined to stop 12 shots for BSU.
UMass Dartmouth is now 7-4-1, while Bridgewater State is now 6-5-1. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Wentworth Thursday evening. The Bears will visit Salem State Saturday.
