NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team under new Head Coach Nicole Hanewich hopes that a strong ethic will help them be successful this fall.
Hanewich said that the results of the team's pre-season camp are evident. "I think we're going to have a close-knit group, and a hard-working team," said Hanewich. "Our goal is to outwork our opponents, and play hard for 90 minutes."
A blend of returning veterans and talented newcomers has made Hanewich optimistic. "We have several young players who are ready to step up and fill the spots left by the players who are not coming back," said Hanewich. "Our strengths lie in our center midfield and our attacking players, but I also feel really confident with our defense. We have a good mix between experienced returning players, and some talented newcomers."
Several key players return. (Senior defender) Nichole Hoffman (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton HS) is probably our hardest worker," said Hanewich. "She's our most vocal player, she's experienced, and she'll give us 90 minutes. Our (senior) goalie, Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS), is experienced and aggressive, and we're very confident with her in goal. (Senior midfielders) Kristen Soares (Berkley, MA/Somerset HS) and Cristal Peixoto (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) are both really fast and smart players. (Senior) Katelyn Tsonis (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS/CCRI), our other captain, is willing to play anywhere she is needed. (Sophomore) Amy Carchedi (Quincy, MA/North Quincy HS), one of our center midfielders, will also contribute."
Several newcomers will make their presence felt. (Freshman) "Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS) has good skills, and she has the potential to score a lot of goals," said Hanewich. "(Freshman) Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, MA/Tri-County HS) is also very quick, while (freshman) Sam Silvia (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS), a center midfielder, reads the ball very well and is a great distributor. (Freshmen) Erin Linsenbigler (Suffield, CT/Suffield HS) and Kathleen Landers (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) will both contribute to our defense, while (sophomore) Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) can be one of our top goal scorers at forward."
Hanewich hopes that improvement in overall play will lead to more goals. "We have to generate enough offense to put the ball in the back of the net," said Hanewich. "In addition to being able to possess and pass the ball, you also need to be able to attack. We have a tight knit group, good cohesion and a really positive attitude this year. We're excited to see what's in store for us, and we have a lot of potential this year."
UMass Dartmouth will begin their 2010 schedule at Endicott this Saturday.
