Sept. 25, 2010

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team fell to visiting UMass Boston, 1-0, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.

The Beacons out shot the Corsairs, 10-5. Senior goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) made five saves for UMD, while freshmen Katie Coscia (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield HS) made two for UMass Boston

The first half featured a battle for control by both teams. During the scoreless first half, the Corsairs managed only one shot on goal while the Beacons had three. "We need to try and put the ball in the net a little bit sooner and not have to try to come from behind when we move into our next game," said Corsairs head coach Nicole Hanewich.

Just after the seventh minute of play, UMass Boston broke the scoreless tie. Beacon junior forward Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, MA/Hingham HS) gathered a loose ball in the Corsair zone then delivered a touch pass to freshmen forward Kelli Neville (Milton, MA/Milton HS) who kicked the ball past Braga, giving the Beacons a 1-0 lead. The Corsairs had a scoring opportunity late in the game ofF a corner kick, but the shot from senior midfielder Cristal Peixoto (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) sailed wide left. The Beacons went on to win by the final of 1-0. "We play well every game but we just can't seem to finish it out, so we need to just really work on playing for 90 minutes and not starting to play when we are already halfway through the game," said Hanewich.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-7-0 and 0-2-0 in the Little East Conference in the loss, while UMass Boston improved to 4-1-3 and 1-0-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Mitchell Wednesday evening. The Beacons will host Becker Tuesday. UMASS DARTMOUTH SOCCER
