Junior Brittany Eldridge
BRIDGEWATER, MA-Junior Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) pitched a two-hitter in the nightcap and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team defeated host Bridgewater State, 3-2 in the second game and earned a split of their non-conference doubleheader at Alumni Field Monday. The Bears won the opener, 5-4.
The Corsairs scored twice in their first two at bats in the nightcap. They took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA /Essex Agricultural HS) doubled and junior third baseman Tracie Calvert (Sandwich, MA /Sandwich HS) singled her home.
UMass Dartmouth went up 2-0 in the second when Pontes drove in a run with a bases-loaded infield grounder, but the Bears came back with a run in their half when right fielder Heather McPherson drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Corsairs scored again in the third on Eldridge's RBI single. BSU scored in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch by Eldridge, but that was all they could muster as Eldridge blanked them for the final four innings. Eldridge earned the win and improved to 9-21, while BSU's Meaghan Dunn took the loss and fell to 11-7.
In the first game, UMass Dartmouth scored twice in the second inning and twice more in the fourth to go ahead, 4-1, but the Bears tied it with three runs in their half of the fifth inning and won it in walk-off fashion with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Eldridge, who relieved starter Ashley Felaccio (Jr. Acushnet, MA/Fairhaven HS/Massasoit CC) in the sixth inning, took the loss.
"It was an exciting way to finish the season, and we finished on a high note," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "It was disappointing to lose the first game, but we fought back in the second game and came out with a win. We were diving everywhere and trying to knock everything down. Hopefully, this will help us to build confidence and carry it into next year."
The Corsairs finished with an overall record of 12-27, while the Bears are now 17-21. BSU will visit Westfield State Thursday in a MASCAC playoff game. The games were the final contests of the season for UMass Dartmouth.
