Softball Bows Twice in Florida
FORT MYERS, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team dropped both games of their softball doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic Monday, losing to Worcester State, 8-0 in five innings, and then to Olivet, 7-4, at the Lee County Sports Complex.
The Corsairs got 10 hits in the nightcap. Senior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS) had two hits and three runs batted in, freshman center fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) had two hits and an RBI, and sophomore shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS), junior infielder Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS), and senior right-hander Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) each had two hits. Eldridge went all the way on the mound, allowing 10 hits, walking two and striking out four.
Pontes got the Corsairs' only hit in the opener, a single. Kenyon started on the mound and took the loss, allowing five hits and the first six runs in three innings before senior Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Massasoit CC) finished, pitching the final 2 1/3 innings.
"Emily and Olivia did a great job on defense in the second game, making diving catches," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "They got two in the first, and we came right back with two. They got three, and we battled back. We had runners on base in the seventh but we couldn't get a timely hit. We didn't capitalize on all of our opportunities, but we kept battling all the way to the end."
UMass Dartmouth is now 1-3, while WSU is 2-4 and Olivet is.3-7. The Corsairs will take Tuesday off and return to action when they play the College of Wooster and Amherst Wednesday.
