Softball Swept In Doubleheader Against Eastern Connecticut

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team was swept in a Little East Conference doubleheader by visiting Eastern Connecticut State at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday. The Warriors won the first game, 8-0 in six innings, and then took the nightcap, 6-2.

The Warriors broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with RBI doubles from junior first baseman Kelly Paterson (Southington, CT/Southington HS) and junior third baseman Arielle Cooper (Mystic, CT/Fitch Sr. HS), giving ECSU a 2-0 lead. The Warriors pushed their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Paterson. In the sixth, ECSU platted five runs, powered by RBI doubles by Cooper, sophomore second baseman Jen Tamindzija (Malden, MA/Malden HS), senior outfielder Priscilla Alicea (Stratford, CT/Trumbull HS), and senior pitcher Molly Rathbun (Hebron, CT/RHAM), en route to the 8-0 victory in six innings. Rathbun (18-1) earned the win, allowing one hit in six innings with 13 strikeouts. Senior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (6-6, Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) took the loss for UMD, giving up eight runs on 10 hits.
In the nightcap, ECSU struck in the top of the first when sophomore centerfielder Mattie Brett (Waterford, CT/Waterford HS) scored on a wild pitch by Eldridge, giving the Warriors an early 1-0. The Warriors added four runs in the top of the second. Brett scored on a bases loaded walk, and then Cooper delivered a base clearing triple, pushing the ECSU lead to 5-0 after two innings. In the top of the fifth, ECSU freshman designated hitter Sam Rossetti (Shelton, CT/Shelton HS) scored on an error by UMD senior third baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS), making it 6-0. The Corsairs put their first run on the board with a solo home run from Eldridge, cutting the UMD deficit to 6-1 after five innings. UMD added a final run in the bottom of the sixth when senior catcher Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS). Eldridge took the loss in seven innings of work, surrendering six runs (four earned) on seven hits with eight strikeouts. ECSU junior pitcher Christine Akcer (2-0, Milford, CT/Jonathan Law HS) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits in five innings.
"We struggled defensively today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "I tip my hat to Molly [Rathbun] in the first game; she is a tough pitcher to go against. We didn't make the adjustment we needed to offensively. Brittany [Eldridge] came through for us, she did her job; we just couldn't pick her up. We need to improve our plate discipline; we chased a lot of pitches today. We need to have a controlled aggression at the plate. We need to take the intensity from the final innings of the second game and carry it into tomorrow's game with Salem State."

UMass Dartmouth is now 8-20 and 3-5 in the Little East Conference, while Eastern Connecticut is 29-1 and 8-0 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salem State Thursday. ECSU will host Rhode Island College Saturday.
