DANBURY, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team dropped both games of their Little East Conference doubleheader against host Western Connecticut State at Westside Field Saturday. The Colonials won the opener, 9-1, and took the nightcap, 7-2.
The Corsairs were limited to a pair of hits in each game. In the opener, sophomore shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural HS) singled in the fourth inning and scored on an error. Freshman center fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) got the Corsairs' other hit later in the inning. The Colonials scored three runs in the second, and added four more in the fifth. Center fielder Jackie Zilnicki had three RBIs for WCSU, while right fielder Melissa Fracker drove in a pair in the game, which ended in the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule. Magen Dargon earned the victory on the mound, improving to 14-5, while senior Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) started and took the loss for UMD, falling to 6-7.
In the nightcap, freshman right fielder Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho HS) hit a two-run homer for UMD in the fifth. Pontes' sixth-inning single was UMD's other hit. The Colonials scored in five of their six at bats, with Zilnicki leading the way with a double, two triples and three runs batted in. Stephanie Moss earned the victory and improved to 6-6, while Eldridge again took the loss and fell to 6-8.
UMass Dartmouth is now 9-23 and 3-7 in the Little East Conference, while Western Connecticut State is 21-11 and 3-5 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Tuesday.
