NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning of the nightcap and defeated visiting Bridgewater State, 6-1, to earn a split of their non-conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday. The Bears won the opener, 5-1 in eight innings.
Eight seniors made their final appearances at home for the Corsairs. They included pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS), outfielder Elizabeth Mulready (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS), catchers Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) and Diane Barry (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS), outfielder Beth Berube (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS), first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS), infielder Tracie Calvert (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich HS) and pitcher Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/Fairhaven HS/Massasoit CC).
The Corsairs took a commanding 6-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap. Sophomore shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS) broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly, and junior third baseman Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) followed with an RBI single. UMD subsequently loaded the bases, and freshman right fielder Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho HS) cleared them with a three-run triple before scoring on Hogan's double to cap the rally.
BSU got on the board in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior center fielder Jordan McDermott (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS).
Eldridge earned the victory on the mound for UMass Dartmouth, improving to 8-11, while junior Meghan Dunn (Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy) took the loss for the Bears, falling to 12-6.
Junior left fielder Melissa Harmon's (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS) two-run homer ignited a four-run eighth inning that carried Bridgewater State to a 5-1 win in the opener.
The Corsairs had come from behind to tie the score with one out in the bottom of the seventh on Eldridge's RBI single. After Harmon's homer, BSU twice more in the eighth on an error and a wild pitch. The Bears had taken the lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by junior catcher Brianna Strecker (Waterford, CT/Waterford HS). Sophomore right-hander Amber White (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro HS) earned the win for BSU, improving to 14-5. Freshman right-hander Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho HS) took the loss for UMD, falling to 1-6.
UMass Dartmouth is now 12-26, while Bridgewater State is 26-11. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Keene State Saturday. The Bears will host Salem State Saturday
