FORT MYERS, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team lost both games of their doubleheader on the final day of their spring trip at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Friday. UMass Dartmouth dropped their opener to SUNY Brockport, 10-0 in five innings, and then was edged in the nightcap by Hamilton, 2-1.
In the nightcap, sophomore right hander Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho Valley HS) went all the way, and also drove in the Corsairs' lone run with a hit. Junior shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Regional HS), freshman outfielder Rachel Carey (Holbrook, MA/Cardinal Spellman HS), sophomore outfielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS), and freshman infielder Katie McEachern (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional HS) also had hits for the Corsairs, who were hurt by a couple of errors that cost them two runs.
"We came back strong in game two and jumped out to an early lead, however, errors turned the game around and hurt us in the end," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "Becky did a great job and held Hamilton to four hits. Coming back up north, we need to buckle down and clean up our defense."
In the opener, the Golden Eagles held UMD to one hit, a third-inning single by senior first baseman Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS).
UMass Dartmouth finished their spring trip with a 4-6 record, while SUNY Brockport is now 5-6 and Hamilton is 3-7. The Corsairs will return home and begin the northern part of their schedule when they host Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday in a doubleheader.
