Softball Sweeps Massachusetts Maritime

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team swept Massachusetts Maritime in a pair of five-inning games in their home opener, winning, 28-1 and 9-1. Both games were shortened due to the eight-run rule.

In the opener, the Corsairs scored 17 times in their first two at bats and added 11 more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to end the game after five innings.

Freshman first baseman Katie McEachern (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional HS) had a home run and four runs batted in for UMass Dartmouth and senior third baseman Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) homered and drove in three runs. Freshman left fielder Rachel Carey (Holbrook, MA/Cardinal Spellman HS) had a double and a triple and junior shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS) doubled twice, and each drove in three runs. Freshman center fielder Shannon Droney (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) doubled and singled three times and drove in four runs, and sophomore right fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) had three RBIs as the Corsairs posted their most lopsided win in recent memory, UMass Dartmouth had 23 hits. Freshman Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA/Case HS) went the distance for the win, allowing seven hits and striking out eight. Senior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, MA/Mount St. Charles HS) took the loss for the Bucs.

MMA took the lead in the top of the first inning of the nightcap, as senior shortstop Rachel Johnson's (South Chatham, MA/Chatham HS) RBI single staked the Bucs to a 1-0 lead.

The Corsairs seized the lead for good in their half of the first, scoring four times. McEachern singled with the bases full to score two runs, and two more scored on a wild pitch. Pontes singled home a run in the second, and two more runs scored on RBI grounders by sophomore second baseman Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and Kenyon. UMD put the game away in the fifth scoring once on a passed ball, and another time when Marcyoniak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Freshman Amanda McHugh (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown HS) scattered three hits to earn the victory, while freshman Marissa Boudreau (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) took the loss for Mass Maritime.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-6 with the sweep, while Mass Maritime dropped to 0-2. The Corsairs will host Roger Williams Wednesday, while the Bucs will host Framingham State Friday.
