Late Curry Rallies Sink Softball

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA –Host Curry scored a run in their final at bat in each game and swept a non-conference doubleheader from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team at the D. Forbes Will Athletic Complex Thursday afternoon. The Colonels won the opener, 5-4 in nine innings, and took the nightcap, 3-2.

In the nightcap, Curry scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, shortstop Megan Flaherty doubled to center field and moved to third on an error. Third baseman Ariel LaRosa singled to score Flaherty.

The Corsairs had scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman center fielder Shannon Droney (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) and junior shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS) reached base on errors. Sophomore right fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) drove Droney home with an infield grounder, and sophomore pitcher Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho HS) doubled home the second run.

Curry had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Flaherty singled, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on LaRosa's sacrifice fly. The Colonels tied it in the third on an RBI single by designated hitter Kaitlyn Maderios. Jen Lundstrom went all the way and earned the win for Curry, improving to 5-5, while Williams took the loss for UMD and fell to 3-4.

In the opener, Curry scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a 4-3 deficit and defeat the Corsairs, who had taken the lead in the top of the inning. Maderios was placed on second base due to the international tie-breaker rule, and was bunted to third by left fielder Taryn Vigeant. Catcher Mikaela Carney singled home Maderios to tie the score. Carney moved to second on an error, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on right fielder Allie Carver's single.

The Corsairs grabbed a 2-0 first inning lead, with one run scoring when Williams reached on an error and another coming home on an infield grounder by senior first baseman Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS). Freshman pitcher Shannon Orton's (Swansea, MA/Case HS) squeeze bunt gave UMD a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth, and sophomore third baseman Jenna Sylvia's (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) RBI single in the ninth put the Corsairs on top, 4-3, before the Colonels rallied to win. Sophomore Taylor Ahearn earned the win on the mound for Curry and improved to 6-5, while Orton took the loss and fell to 3-8.

UMass Dartmouth is now 9-17, while Curry is now 15-11. The Corsairs return to action when they visit UMass Boston Saturday. The Colonels will host Nichols Saturday.
