PROVIDENCE, RI – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team dropped both games of their Little East Conference doubleheader to host Rhode Island College at Dayna Bazar Memorial Softball Field Wednesday. The Anchorwomen won the opener, 4-2, and the nightcap, 9-1 in five innings. The game was halted because of the eight-run rule.
In the opener, the Corsairs scored first, getting a run in the top of the second on a double by sophomore center fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) and an RBI single by senior catcher Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield). UMass Dartmouth scored again in the fourth, when Marcyoniak singled home junior shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech), who reached on a fielder's choice.
RIC tied it in the fifth on a two-run homer by third baseman Justina Thoma, then took the lead in the sixth on a two-run double by center fielder Stacy Pokora. Emily Johnson earned the win, improving to 8-4, while freshman Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA/Case) took the loss, falling to 5-11.
In the second game, the Corsairs scored their only run in the fifth on a double by sophomore second baseman Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) and an RBI single by Pontes. The Anchorwomen scored three times in the second, then added five more in the fourth on a two-run double by Pokora and Thoma's three-run homer. Jessica Borden earned the win and improved to 4-4, while sophomore Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho HS) started and took the loss for UMD, falling to 3-5.
The Corsairs dropped to 11-25 overall and 3-9 in the Little East, while the Anchorwomen improved to 18-18 and 7-5 in LEC play. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State Thursday. RIC will visit Tufts Thursday.
