BRIDGEWATER, MA– The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team rallied to earn a split with host Bridgewater State in their non-conference doubleheader at the Edward C. Swenson Athletic Complex Thursday. UMD dropped the opener, 6-0, and claimed the nightcap, 1-0.
Freshman pitcher Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA/Case) pitched a four-hit shutout in the second game. The Corsairs scored the game's only run when Orton led off the top of the seventh with a double. Pinch-runner Jess Goncalves (Sr. New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) replaced Orton, and scored on a subsequent RBI triple by freshman right fielder Rachel Carey (Holbrook, MA/Cardinal Spellman HS). Orton improved to 6-11, while Meghan Dunn took the loss for BSU and fell to 7-9.
In the opener, BSU scored once in the bottom of the first when catcher Brianna Strecker stole home, got another run in the fourth on a wild pitch, and scored four times in the fifth, twice on a double by left fielder Melissa Harmon. The Corsairs were limited to one hit, a fourth-inning single by sophomore second baseman Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth). Amber White and Corrie McCue combined for the one-hitter, with White pitching six innings and earning the win to improve to 11-5. Freshman Amanda McHugh (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown HS) started and took the loss, falling to 3-9.
The Corsairs are now 12-24, while the Bears are 18-14. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Southern Maine Saturday. BSU will visit Mass Maritime Friday.
