Plymouth State Sweeps Softball
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team fell to visiting Plymouth State in both games of the opening 2013 Little East Conference doubleheader for both teams at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon. The Panthers took game one by a 4-0 final before winning the nightcap 10-5.
In the opener, Plymouth State (8-7, 2-0 LEC) rapped out six hits in scoring runs in the top of the first, fourth, fifth and seven innings. Sam Hebert (Manchester, NH/Memorial) went 1-for-2 for the Panthers with a walk and two RBI, while Bekah Jackson (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) had a triple and two runs scored.
Nora Galvin (Windham, NH/Salem) went the distance for PSU on the mound to record her third victory of the year. The junior struck out eight and walked one while limiting the Corsairs (8-10, 0-2 LEC) to only three hits.
Freshman pitcher Amanda McHugh (North Kingston, RI/North Kingston) went the full seven for the home squad, allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five.
In the nightcap, the Panthers built a 7-0 lead before UMass Dartmouth pushed across three runs in the bottom of the second inning. A leadoff double by sophomore outfielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton) and a two-out two RBI triple down the right field line by junior infielder Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech.) highlighted the UMD half inning.
The Corsairs managed two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by freshman outfielder Shannon Droney (Franklin, MA/Franklin) and Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) after PSU scored one of its own in the top of the frame.
Plymouth State tacked on two insurance runs in the top half of the seventh to account for the 10-5 final.
Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, NH/Kennett) picked up the win in the circle, in moving her record to 4-2 on the season. Cynthia Barata (New Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) worked three scoreless innings to pick up the save.
Jackson paced the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two extra-base hits, four runs scored and a RBI. Teammate Jackie Digman (Burlington, MA/Burlington) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) went 2-for-3 to lead UMass Dartmouth offensively, while Gregoire added two hits of her own.
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Framingham State Tuesday with the first pitch of game one slated for 3 p.m. The Panthers visit Lesley that same day.
