CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday at the Cape Coral Sports Complex. In the morning session, UMass Dartmouth fell to Smith College, 5-1, and later in the day the College of Brockport held off the Corsairs to earn a 6-2 victory.
Caroline Kushner recorded two hits to go with one walk, RBI and run for Smith College. Edie Richardson contributed a pair of hits, including a double and two RBI's, while Joanna Giordano added two singles and knocked in one run.
The Pioneers did all their scoring in the bottom half of the first inning. Richardson ignited the offense with a two-run double. Kushner followed with an RBI single and freshman Brittney Blokker increased the Smith College lead to four when she grounded out to short. Kushner crossed the plate on a ground out to cap a five-run first.
Pioneer sophomore Gina Martucci fanned seven and allowed one run in a complete game performance to earn her first win of the season, while freshman Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) surrendered one run in six innings of relief work for the Corsairs.
In Game 2, the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early six run lead on five hits in the opening inning. Spinuzzi helped the Corsairs chip into the deficit in the sixth when she blasted an RBI double and later scored on a fielding error.
Brockport had six different players reach the hit column with Sarah Rosenbarker highlighting the offensive attack with two singles. On the hill, Korey Kibling allowed four hits and struck out six batters to earn her second win of the season.
Spinuzzi and Bre Marcyoniak (Westfield, Mass.) each recorded a pair of knocks and were the only UMass Dartmouth players to crack the hit column for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth returns to the field on Tuesday, March 18, for a 9 a.m. matchup against Wis. – Platteville at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
