CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and the University of Wisconsin-Superior this afternoon at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
The Pioneers defeated UMass Dartmouth, 6-3, and the Yellow Jackets nipped the Corsairs, 3-2. On the year, UMass Dartmouth dips to 0-6, while Wis.-Platteville improves to 4-3 and Wis. Superior to 11-4.
With a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth inning, Wis.-Platteville erupted for four runs. Third baseman Chelsey Walker began the surge when she reached base with a one out double. Sophomore Hannah Phease found a patch of grass in the outfield to push home Walker, then senior Becca Lowe doubled home Phease to increase the Pioneer's lead, 4-2. Consecutive fielding errors by UMass Dartmouth allowed Lowe and shortstop Lisa Karau to touch home plate.
Freshman Ally Santerre (Swansea, Mass.) went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and scored all three runs for the Corsairs, while classmate Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) batted .500 in four at-bats and added an RBI.
Sophomore Keri Treml went the distance for the Pioneers, surrendering three runs and fanning six. Sophomore Beth Castantini (Newburyport, Mass.) and freshman Abby Trembla (New Bedford, Mass.) split time on the mound for UMass Dartmouth.
In Game 2, the Corsair's late game comeback fell short. Facing a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh with no outs, Spinuzzi reached first on one of her two hits in the contest. Freshman Chelsea Correia (Bridgewater, Mass.) followed with a double to left field, but Spinuzzi was thrown out attempting to reach third base on the hit. After Kayla Kirby (Westport, Mass.) ripped a single, a Yellow Jacket fielding error allowed Correia to score and bring UMass Dartmouth within one run. The Corsairs were pressing and had the tying run on second and the winning run on first with one out. Freshman Alea Martinelli (Everett, Mass.) lined out to Wis.-Superior shortstop Britnee Blake who threw to Shelly Misco to double-up Kirby at second base.
Sarah Hendrickson gave up two runs and scattered five hits through seven innings of work for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Shannon Orton (Swansea, Mass.) struck out seven and surrendered five hits in the loss for UMass Dartmouth.
UMass Dartmouth will resume play on Wednesday, March 19, when the Corsairs take on Clarkson at 9 a.m.
