Hawks Claw Past Corsairs
BRISTOL, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team dropped a pair of games to Roger Williams University on Thursday afternoon at the Paolino Field. The Hawks won Game 1 by a score of 2-0 and edged the Corsairs, 6-5, in nine innings during Game 2.
UMass Dartmouth slips to 4-10 on the season, while the Roger Williams improves to 11-9.
With a 4-4 game in the top of the ninth in Game 2, senior Bre Marcyoniak (Westfield, Mass.) laid down a successful bunt, allowing sophomore Rachle Carey (Holbrook, Mass.) to cross the plate and give the Corsairs a one run lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Delaney Burns tied the game for the Hawks when she reached on a fielder's choice to push teammate Chelsea Boulrisse home. Later in the inning, a fielding miscue allowed for Molly Petrone to score and give the home team the win.
Meghan Maliga threw two innings in relief to earn her seventh win of the season for Roger Williams, while Shannon Orton pitched all eight innings for UMass Dartmouth in the loss.
In Game 1, Maliga had the Corsair batters off-balanced as she threw seven innings of shutout softball, allowing only four hits and fanning three. The Hawks scored their only two runs in the bottom of the second off a fielding error by UMass Dartmouth and in the proceeding inning off a wild pitch.
The Corsairs open up Little East Conference play on Saturday, April 5, when UMass Dartmouth hosts UMass Boston in double header action beginning at 1 p.m.
